Early Life and Career
Ryuji Abe, a Japanese track and field athlete, hails from Okayama Prefecture. As a high school student in 2009, he excelled in both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles, claiming silver and gold medals at the Japanese High School Championships, respectively. In mid-2009, he chose to focus solely on the latter event.
International Success on the Junior Stage
At the 2010 World Junior Championships in Athletics, Abe showcased his prowess by setting a personal best of 49.46 seconds. His performance earned him the silver medal, narrowly behind Jamaican favorite Jehue Gordon. He also contributed to the fifth-place finish of the Japanese 4x400m relay team. Abe's time with hurdles placed him among the top three Asian athletes in the event that year.
Regional Dominance and National Breakthrough
In 2011, Abe continued to excel, clocking his second sub-50-second time at the Japanese Athletics Championships, where he secured third place with a time of 49.81 seconds. This performance earned him a spot on the Japanese team for the 2011 Asian Athletics Championships in Kobe. At the event, he seized his first regional title, winning gold with a time of 49.64 seconds.
