Biography of Tal Wilkenfeld

Early Life and Musical Journey

Tal Wilkenfeld is an Australian bass guitarist who has captivated listeners and critics alike with her remarkable skill on the instrument. She achieved a high level of mastery in a relatively short amount of time, which typically requires much more practice and dedication. Wilkenfeld turned professional as a bassist just three years after she began playing the instrument. She gained fame by performing with renowned rock and jazz artists. In 2008, she was named "The Year's Most Exciting New Player" by readers of Bass Player magazine. Currently, she plays in her own group, the "Tal Wilkenfeld Trio," alongside guitarist Wayne Krantz and drummer Keith Carlock.

Wilkenfeld started playing guitar at the age of 14 and switched to bass at 17. Within a few months, she began composing her own music and had a desire to form her own band. Reflecting on her choice of instrument, she once stated:

Move to the United States and Rising Fame

In 2002, Wilkenfeld graduated from high school and moved to the United States at the age of 16. She settled in Los Angeles, where she attended the Los Angeles Music Academy. Later, she moved to New York, where she performed in clubs and gained recognition.

Solo Album and Collaborations

In 2006, Tal Wilkenfeld recorded her solo album titled "Transformation" in just two days. On this album, she showcased her skills as a bass guitarist, composer, producer, and arranger. The album featured musicians such as Wayne Krantz, Geoffrey Keezer, Seamus Blake, and Keith Carlock, as well as guest artists Samuel Torres and Oteil Burbridge, to whom one of the compositions was dedicated.

Wilkenfeld also toured with Jeff Beck. Her performance with him at the Crossroads Festival was televised on PBS in November 2007. The credits did not mention the members of Jeff Beck's band, and she was mistaken for Jeff Beck's daughter, Becky Gocho. She also performed with Beck in 2009 at his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
