Taliya Dawkins: The Armless Gymnastics Prodigy

Birth and Amniotic Band Amputation

Taliya Dawkins was born with a congenital limb difference, known as amniotic band amputation, affecting her left hand. While in the womb, her arm became entangled in amniotic bands, cutting off circulation and preventing its proper development.

Early Prostheses and Active Childhood

Despite her limb difference, Taliya has always led an active life. She received her first prosthetic arm at just six weeks old. She enjoys a variety of sports, including acrobatics, swimming, skating, and especially gymnastics.

Custom Device for Gymnastics

To overcome the challenges of gymnastics, which often require both hands, Taliya's team at the Portsmouth Limb Centre developed a custom device for her prosthetic arm. The device provides her with a stable base for handstands, cartwheels, and other gymnastic maneuvers.

Triumphing Over Challenges

Taliya's mother, Sabrina, admires her daughter's determination. Despite her limb difference, Taliya finds ways to accomplish most tasks on her own, excelling in sports and other activities.

Prenatal Diagnosis and Preparation

Taliya's limb difference was first discovered at Sabrina's 20-week pregnancy scan. While the earlier 16-week scan showed no abnormalities, the news came as a shock. However, it allowed Sabrina to prepare for Taliya's birth.

Close Collaboration with Prosthetic Specialist

Emily Harrison, a senior prosthetist at the Portsmouth Limb Centre, works closely with Taliya. Whenever Taliya expresses a new desire, they explore possible solutions together. Harrison has designed seven different prosthetics for Taliya, tailored to her needs.

Choosing Independence

Taliya prefers to complete tasks independently. She declines assistance and strives to overcome challenges on her own. She has achieved success in swimming, athletics, and gymnastics.

Amniotic Band Amputation

Amniotic band amputation occurs when a developing limb becomes tangled in strands of the amniotic sac, cutting off blood supply and halting its growth. This rare condition affects approximately one in 4,000 pregnancies.
