Singing Dad with Alzheimer's Finds New Life Through Karaoke
A heartwarming video of an elderly British father with Alzheimer's disease singing classic hits in a car has gone viral, bringing him newfound stardom and raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity.

Ted McDermott: The "Songaminute Man"
Ted McDermott, now 80, was once known as the "Songaminute Man" for his extraordinary ability to memorize the lyrics of any popular song on the spot. He sang in dance bands in his youth, but gave up his musical aspirations for a stable job when his wife became pregnant.

Alzheimer's Takes Hold
In 2011, Ted's family began to notice signs of memory loss. By 2013, he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. As the disease progressed, Ted gradually lost his independence and self-awareness. He often failed to recognize his son, Simon, and would sometimes propose marriage to his beloved wife, Lynda.

Karaoke in the Car
Determined to preserve his father's talent, Simon took Ted and Lynda for drives in the Ribble Valley. One day, as "Quando Quando Quando" played on the car stereo, Ted started singing along. Simon captured the moment on video and posted it on Facebook.

Viral Video and Fundraising
The video quickly went viral, reaching over 60 million views. It also inspired a crowdfunding campaign for the Alzheimer's Society, raising over £125,000.

Decca Contract and a Single
In 2017, Ted signed a recording contract with Decca Records and released his first single, a cover of Frank Sinatra's "You Make Me Feel So Young." While Ted may not fully understand the significance of his newfound fame, his family is grateful for the joy it has brought him.

Simon's Reflections
Simon acknowledges that Ted's singing has not stopped the progression of his disease, but it has given him renewed purpose and strengthened his family's bond. "He seems happy," says Simon. "And that's enough for us."
