Early Life and Education
Teeyonah Parris was born on September 22, 1987, in Hopkins, South Carolina. Raised alongside her older and younger brothers, she was encouraged to dream big and pursue her passions without limitations.
From a young age, Parris was drawn to the performing arts, participating in talent shows and modeling competitions. She excelled academically, becoming the first African American freshman to win Miss Lower Richland High School and actively engaging in softball, cheerleading, step aerobics, and dance.
After graduating high school, Parris attended the Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities in Greenville, South Carolina. She subsequently gained admission to the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied under Richard Feldman and Wendy Waterman.
Breakthrough Roles
Parris made her acting debut in 2010 with appearances in short films, television episodes, and the feature film "How Do You Know." Her breakout role came in "Dear White People," earning her a Black Reel Award.
In 2015, she joined the cast of "Mad Men" as Dawn Chambers, the first Black employee at the fictional advertising agency Sterling Cooper. Parris continued to make a mark in films such as Spike Lee's "Chi-Raq," winning an AAFCA Award for her performance.
Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)
Despite several unsuccessful auditions, Parris finally landed the role of Monica Rambeau in Marvel's "WandaVision" in 2019. Rambeau is a key character in the MCU, and Parris's casting marked a significant step forward in the representation of African American actresses in superhero films.
She reprised the role in the sequel to "Captain Marvel" (2023), directed by Nia DaCosta. The film explores complex social issues and features a predominantly female cast, showcasing Parris's versatility as an actress.
