A Distinctive Leader: The Journey of Halimah Yacob
Early Life and EducationHalimah Yacob, born on 23 August 1954, is the first woman President of Singapore, elected on 14 September 2017. Hailing from a modest background, she attended Siglap Secondary School before pursuing a Diploma in Law from the University of Singapore. Her unwavering drive for knowledge led her to the National University of Singapore, where she obtained an LL.B. (Hons.) degree in 1978.
Legal Career and Social Activism
Yacob embarked on a successful legal career, joining the Singapore Legal Service in 1979. She served as a Deputy Public Prosecutor and Senior State Counsel, demonstrating her expertise in legal matters. Her passion for social justice and community involvement propelled her to pursue a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Birmingham in 1997.
Political Journey
Entering the political arena, Yacob was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Jurong GRC in 2001. Her dedication to serving her constituents earned her the trust of voters, and she retained her seat in subsequent elections.
Cabinet Appointments
Yacob's exceptional leadership and policy acumen led to her appointment as Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports in 2003. She later held various cabinet positions, including Minister for Social and Family Development (2010-2011), Senior Minister of State for Health (2011-2012), and Minister for Social and Family Development and Minister in the Prime Minister's Office (2012-2015).
Speaker of Parliament
In 2013, Yacob was elected as the Speaker of Parliament, becoming the first woman to hold this prestigious office. Her impartiality and leadership in presiding over parliamentary proceedings earned her widespread respect.
Presidential Election
In 2017, Yacob announced her intention to stand as a candidate for the Presidential Election. As the sole Malay candidate, she faced an uphill battle against four male contenders. However, her unwavering determination and vision for Singapore captivated the electorate.
Historic Presidency
In August 2017, Yacob emerged victorious, securing over 63% of the popular vote. Her election marked a historic milestone, as she became the first Malay President of Singapore in 47 years and the first woman to hold the office.
Presidential Tenure
During her presidency, Yacob has focused on fostering social harmony, supporting the disadvantaged, and promoting Singapore's international standing. She has also played a key role in the fight against COVID-19, working closely with the government and community organizations to mitigate the pandemic's impact.
Personal Life
Yacob is married to Mohamed Abdullah Alhabshee, a former judge. They have five children. In her spare time, Yacob enjoys reading, cooking, and spending time with her family.
