Early Life and Education
Theo James, born as Theodore Peter Taptiklis, is a British actor and musician. He was born on December 16, 1984, in Oxford, England. Theo is the youngest of five children born to Philip Taptiklis, a business consultant, and Jane Martin, an employee of the National Health Service.
Theo attended the prestigious Aylesbury Grammar School, where he excelled in the humanities. In his free time, he played basketball, listened to hip-hop, and hung out with his friends, referring to themselves as the "crew."
After graduating from high school, Theo enrolled at the University of Nottingham, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy. During his time as a student, he worked as a bartender, a bodyguard, and a hospital orderly to supplement his income.
Acting Career
Theo's entry into acting was somewhat unexpected. While dating his then-girlfriend, he was encouraged to attend an audition for the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Despite initially going "for something to do," Theo auditioned with a poem and was accepted, while his girlfriend was not.
After graduating from drama school, Theo shortened his first name and began using his middle name as his surname. He made his theatrical debut in the play "Starstruck" and soon secured a role in the television series "A Passionate Woman."
Film Breakthrough
Theo's television appearances led to his breakthrough role in the film "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger" (2010), alongside Woody Allen, Josh Brolin, and Naomi Watts. He then landed the role of the vampire David in the "Underworld" franchise, starting with "Underworld: Awakening" (2012).
In 2013, Theo gained international recognition for his role as Four in the dystopian action film "Divergent." The film was a box office success, spawning two sequels: "Insurgent" (2015) and "Allegiant" (2016).
Other Notable Roles
Beyond "Divergent," Theo starred in the detective thriller "London Fields" (2015), the dark comedy "War on Everyone" (2016), and the psychological drama "The Benefactor" (2015). He also appeared in the historical drama "The Secret Scripture" (2016).
Music Career
Before becoming an actor, Theo pursued music. He played piano, guitar, harmonica, and saxophone. His rich baritone voice led to him becoming the lead singer of the British pop group "Makora."
Theo later formed his own band, "Shere Khan," named after the tiger from Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book." The band performed original songs and toured local London clubs. However, in 2012, Shere Khan announced its disbandment.
Personal Life
Theo is known for being private about his personal life. He does not have any active social media accounts and rarely comments on his relationships.
Rumors have circulated about his past romances, including one with his drama school classmate Ruth Kearney. After the release of "Divergent," fans speculated about a relationship between Theo and his co-star Shailene Woodley. However, neither relationship has been confirmed.
Other Interests
Theo is fluent in English and can flawlessly mimic the accents of Americans, Scotsmen, Australians, and Irishmen, often fooling native speakers. He is also athletic, enjoying sports such as diving, cliff jumping, boxing, and football.
During his time at drama school, Theo mastered various dance styles, including tap, classical ballet, and jazz-modern. He is an avid fan of action films and is particularly fond of the "Indiana Jones" franchise.
Present and Future Projects
Theo continues to star in major productions. In 2018, he appeared in the drama "The Exception" alongside Christopher Plummer and Lily James. He is currently filming the science fiction film "Zoe," starring alongside Ewan McGregor and Léa Seydoux.
