A German Musicologist

German musicologist Max Friedrich August Kroyerwas born in 1863. His academic journey began at the University of Munich, where he studied under Adolf Sandberger, while concurrently pursuing counterpoint and piano studies at the Royal Academy of Music under Josef Rheinberger.

Early Career and Dissertation

In 1897, Kroyer completed his dissertation under Sandberger's guidance, focusing on the Italian madrigal. He further received his habilitation in 1907, with a thesis on the motets of Ludwig Senfl. Throughout this period, he served as a music critic for the Allgemeine Zeitung in Munich.

Academic Positions

After his habilitation, Kroyer became an extraordinary professor in Munich for twelve years before moving to Heidelberg University in 1919. There, he succeeded Hermann Abert as professor of musicology the following year. From 1923 to 1932, he led the musicology program at Leipzig University, playing a pivotal role in establishing the Museum of Musical Instruments. His academic career concluded with a professorship at the University of Cologne from 1932 to 1938.

Research Interests and Legacy

Kroyer's research centered on 16th-century music. He compiled the first volume of a new edition of Senfl's works and edited selected compositions by Gregor Aichinger. Additionally, he published books on his mentor Rheinberger (1916) and the composer Walter Courvoisier (1929). Kroyer's legacy as an educator is evident in the renowned students he mentored, including Karl Lauks, Eugen Schmitz, Hans von Benda, Heinrich Strobel, Wolfgang Fortner, and Walter Gerstenberg.
