Born on January 18, 1963, in Iowa, Waitt spent his early years there. He attended the University of Iowa but did not complete his degree.
Gateway 2000
In 1985, Waitt co-founded Gateway 2000 with Mike Hammond, using $10,000 borrowed from his grandmother. Initially based on his father's ranch, the company eventually moved to South Dakota and then California in 1998, where it became a major player in the PC industry.
Retirement and Philanthropy
After 20 years as CEO of Gateway, Waitt stepped down in 2005 but remained active in philanthropy through the Waitt Family Foundation. Founded in 1993, the foundation initially focused on domestic violence prevention and family support. It has since expanded its mission to include building thriving communities through family empowerment.
