Early Life and Education

Tereza Berg was born in Frankfurt, Germany, on a date that is not publicly known. She began her formal vocal studies in her hometown at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main, under the tutelage of Julius Stockhausen. She later continued her studies in Cologne with Franz Wüllner and in Berlin with Etelka Gerster.

Debut and Breakthrough

In 1899, Berg made her successful debut in Berlin, performing chamber vocal repertoire accompanied by pianist Alfred Reisenauer. Her exceptional talent and captivating voice quickly earned her critical acclaim. As her career progressed, she became renowned for her interpretations of German Lieder, particularly the works of Schubert and Hugo Wolf, including those composed specifically for her by her future husband, Artur Schnabel.

Marriage and Family

In 1905, Tereza Berg married the renowned pianist Artur Schnabel. Their union was blessed with two sons, Karl Ulrich Schnabel, who became a celebrated pianist, and Stefan Schnabel, who pursued a successful career as an actor.

International Success

Together with her husband and later with her son, Berg formed a renowned ensemble that performed extensively throughout Europe before World War I. Their performances were characterized by their exquisite musicianship and sensitive interpretations of the German Lieder repertoire.

Life in Exile

During the 1930s, Tereza Berg and her husband resided in England and Italy due to the political turmoil in Germany. In 1939, they immigrated to the United States, where they continued to share their musical artistry with audiences until their passing.
