Biography of Thomas Bartholin

Thomas Bartholin was a Danish physician and mathematician who gained recognition for his discoveries in the human lymphatic system and his advancements in the theory of freezing anesthesia, which he was the first to describe scientifically.

Family Legacy

Thomas Bartholin was born into a family known for their exceptional scholars, with twelve of his relatives becoming professors at the University of Copenhagen. Over three generations, the Bartholin family made significant contributions to anatomy and medicine in the 17th and 18th centuries. Thomas' father, Caspar Bartholin the Elder (1585-1629), his brother Rasmus Bartholin (1625-1698), and his son Caspar Bartholin the Younger (1655-1738) all made notable contributions in their respective fields.

Discovery of the Lymphatic System

In December 1652, Bartholin published the first complete description of the human lymphatic system. Jean Pecquet had noted the presence of such a system in animals in 1651, and the discovery of the thoracic duct and its connection to the veins made Pecquet the first to describe the correct flow of lymphatic fluid into the blood. Almost immediately after Pecquet and Bartholin's publications, a similar study of the human lymphatic system was published by Olof Rudbeck in 1653. Despite presenting his findings to Queen Christina of Sweden in April-May 1652, prior to Bartholin, Rudbeck delayed the publication until 1653, which came out after Bartholin's works. As a result, a fierce dispute arose regarding the priority of the discovery.

Contributions to Freezing Anesthesia

The 22nd chapter of Thomas and Rasmus Bartholin's publication "De nivis usu medico observationes variae" contains the earliest known mention of freezing anesthesia - a method that Thomas Bartholin attributed to the Italian Marco Aurelio Severino from Naples. According to Bartholin's records, Severino was the first to demonstrate the use of freezing mixtures of snow and ice in 1646, and Thomas Bartholin initially learned about this technique from him during his visit to Naples.

Legacy

Thomas Bartholin's father, brother, and son made significant contributions to the key methods of modern medicine through their discoveries of essential anatomical structures and phenomena. Caspar Bartholin the Elder began teaching as a professor at the University of Copenhagen in 1613, and for the next 125 years, the scientific achievements of the Bartholin family members working at the medical faculty of the University of Copenhagen gained international recognition and contributed to the university's reputation.

Thomas Bartholin was the second of six sons of Caspar Bartholin, a physician from Malmö, Skåne, and his wife Anna Fincke. Caspar Bartholin the Elder published his first work in anatomy in 1611. This work was later illustrated and reissued by Thomas, becoming a standard anatomy reference. Bartholin visited the Italian botanist Pietro Castelli in Messina in 1644. In 1663, Bartholin purchased Hagstedgaard, which burned down in 1670 along with his library and numerous manuscripts. King Christian V of Denmark appointed Bartholin as a court physician with a significant salary and exempted his possessions from taxation as compensation for the loss. In 1680, Bartholin's health deteriorated, and his estate was sold. He returned to Copenhagen, where he passed away. Thomas Bartholin was buried in the Vor Frue Kirke church.

The greater vestibular gland and Bartholin's glands are named after Thomas Bartholin's son, the renowned Danish anatomist Caspar Bartholin the Younger. Bartholinsgade, a street in Copenhagen, is named in honor of their family. Nearby is the Bartholin Institute (Bartholin Institutet).
