Early Life and CareerThomas Buchanan, a white American, was born into the prominent Buchanan family, with his cousin being the 15th President of the United States, James Buchanan. Prior to his gubernatorial appointment, Buchanan served as an agent for the Pennsylvania and New York Colonization Societies at Bassa Cove, which was later renamed Buchanan in his honor.
Becoming Governor
In 1839, Liberia declared itself a commonwealth, and Thomas Buchanan was elected as its first governor. During his tenure, the United States continued to send African Americans to Liberia, who settled primarily in coastal areas.
Accomplishments and Legacy
As governor, Buchanan oversaw the gradual expansion of Liberian territory and the establishment of settlements by African American immigrants. He served until his untimely death on September 3, 1841, from malaria or yellow fever.
