Harold David Guy James Murray

Harold David Guy James Murray (1868-1951) was a prominent English chess composer and writer.

Chess Compositions

Murray composed over 6,500 chess compositions, primarily in "fairy chess" variants. He published around 5,000 of these, inventing new pieces (e.g., the nightrider, grasshopper) and modifying the movement rules of conventional pieces.

Journalism and Editing

Murray was the president of the British Chess Problem Society from 1931 to 1943. He founded the magazine "The Problemist" and edited the "Fairy Chess" and endgame sections of "Chess Amateur" (1916-1930) and the problem section of "British Chess Magazine" (1931-1951).

Other Works

In addition to his chess compositions and journalism, Murray published approximately 900 orthodox problems, 140 endgame studies, and numerous analytical problems on retrograde analysis. He also wrote several short stories on chess themes.

Scientific Career

Murray was also a chemist. His scientific interests extended to chess, as evidenced by his work on maximummers and task compositions.
