Tomas Eloy Martinez was born in 1934 in San Miguel de Tucuman, Argentina. He obtained his philological education at the University of Tucuman and later went to study in France, where he also attended the University of Paris, focusing on Spanish and Latin American literature.

Journalism and Exile

In the late 1960s, Martinez began working as a journalist and reporter for Argentine and French newspapers. In the mid-1970s, seeking refuge from the military dictatorship in Argentina, he emigrated to Venezuela, settling in Caracas. There, he wrote for the newspaper "El Diario," while also facing censorship and persecution for his work. Martinez recounted the abuses against political prisoners in his documentary novel "La pasion segun Trelew" (The Passion According to Trelew), which drew attention and controversy, with copies of the book being publicly burned in Buenos Aires.

Literary Career

Martinez's first novel, "Sagrado," was published in 1969, and since then, most of his novels have been based on documentary material. His unique method of transforming history into narrative has garnered attention from literary researchers. International Success

Martinez wrote approximately ten books, with only two of them, "Santa Evita" and "El cantor de tango," being translated into Russian. "Santa Evita," published in 1995, became a sensation, exploring the enigmatic figure of Eva Peron in Argentine history. The book received critical acclaim worldwide and is considered one of Martinez's most renowned works. Another popular book by Martinez is "La novela de Peron," dedicated to the Argentine president Juan Domingo Peron and his second wife, Eva. His last published book, "El vuelo de la reina," also gained significant recognition.

Other Endeavors

In addition to his writing, Martinez wrote several screenplays for Argentine films, such as "El Ultimo piso," "El Terrorista," and "El Demonio en la sangre" in the early 1960s. He also briefly lived in the United States, teaching at Rutgers University in New Jersey and the University of Maryland. However, Martinez eventually returned to Argentina.

Legacy

On January 31, 2010, Tomas Eloy Martinez passed away at the age of 76 after a long battle with cancer.
