Biography of Thor Nish Christiansen
Thor Nish Christiansen was born on December 28, 1957, in Denmark. He immigrated to Inglewood, California, with his parents and later moved to Solvang when he was five years old. His father owned a restaurant in Solvang. Christiansen showed great intelligence and had good grades in school. However, he soon started neglecting his education, smoking marijuana, and drinking. He left his parents, dropped out of school, and found work at a gas station, eventually gaining a significant amount of weight.
Obsessions and Crimes
Christiansen became obsessed with twisted fantasies of killing women and engaging in sexual acts with their dead bodies. Transitioning from unhealthy fantasies to real actions, he stole a .22 caliber pistol and committed his first three murders. Afterward, Christiansen moved to Oregon, lost weight, and returned to Santa Barbara County, where he obtained his high school diploma while attending a community college. He relocated to Goleta, California, with a woman he met while hitchhiking. During their time together, Christiansen committed another murder. It is believed that all of his victims were hitchhikers. He would shoot them in the head with the stolen pistol and then engage in sexual acts with their bodies.
Capture and Conviction
Lydia Preston, Christiansen's fifth victim, managed to escape from him despite being shot in the head. She later identified him in a Los Angeles bar. Preston reported the incident to the police, leading to Christiansen's arrest on July 11, 1979. He quickly became a suspect in the murders of Rook, Sarris, Lainey, and other women in Isla Vista. Santa Barbara County law enforcement also considered him a suspect in approximately 100 murders in 1977, as he was found in possession of a .22 caliber pistol when arrested for drunk driving. Christiansen's first trial took place in Santa Monica in the 1980s, where he initially claimed insanity but later recanted his statement. In June 1980, he pleaded guilty to the Isla Vista murders and received a life sentence. At that time, the death penalty was not practiced in California.
Death and Legacy
On March 30, 1981, Christiansen was fatally stabbed in Folsom State Prison, and his killer was never identified. Psychiatrists predicted that he would face difficulties in prison due to his young age and the fact that his last victim was African American. Patricia Lainey became a symbol for groups advocating against violence in Santa Barbara, Goleta, and the Isla Vista area. Since 1977, the Isla Vista Juggling Festival has been held annually, dedicating its purpose to Lainey. The festival celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2006.
