Biography of Tom Sharkey

Tom Sharkey, an American boxer of Irish descent, was born in Dundalk, Ireland. In his early years, he ran away from home and joined the navy as a young sailor. He arrived in New York City in 1892 and joined the American fleet. Eventually, he was sent to Hawaii, where he began his professional boxing career.

Known for his wide shoulders and tattoos of a star and a battleship on his chest, Sharkey quickly gained attention in the boxing world. Despite his lack of defensive skills, he could withstand attacks and deliver powerful blows.

In 1896, Sharkey faced experienced fighter Joe Choynski and later had a match against "Gentleman Jim" Corbett, which ended in a draw due to police intervention. However, on December 2, 1896, Sharkey fought Bob Fitzsimmons and, despite being knocked down in the 8th round, was declared the winner due to Fitzsimmons' disqualification.

Sharkey's title as heavyweight champion was short-lived as James J. Corbett returned to the ring and took the championship away from him.

On November 22, 1898, Sharkey fought Corbett once again and managed to knock him down, seemingly securing a victory. However, in the 9th round, one of Corbett's seconds interfered, leading to Sharkey's disqualification and Corbett's win.

In 1899, after defeating Kid McCoy, Sharkey earned the opportunity to fight James J. Jeffries for the championship. Although they had previously fought, with Jeffries winning, this rematch was the first one captured on camera. The fight was intense, with Sharkey dominating in the beginning, but Jeffries eventually gained control and won the match.

Despite their fierce battles, Jeffries and Sharkey became close friends. Jeffries even admitted that Sharkey was his most dangerous opponent.

In 1938, Sharkey was admitted to a hospital in San Francisco, where it was reported that his illness was incurable. He passed away in the same hospital in 1953 and was buried in San Bruno, California.
