A British Girl's Journey to Weight Loss and Loose Skin
Tori Swan, a 19-year-old from Cramlington, Northumberland, embarked on a weight loss journey that transformed her life but also left her facing a new challenge: loose skin.
Childhood Obesity and Bullying
Growing up, Tori struggled with obesity and was subjected to relentless bullying at school. Her weight spiraled out of control, leaving her feeling ashamed and insecure. She even hid in the toilet at her prom to avoid showing herself in her custom-made plus-size dress.
A Date that Became a Catalyst
In 2015, Tori met Dan Turner, now 23, on the dating site PlentyOfFish. Despite her upfront warning to Dan about her size, he was shocked to see her in person. This encounter became the catalyst for Tori's weight loss journey.
Rapid Weight Loss and Sagging Skin
Determined to improve herself for her relationship, Tori gave up junk food and switched to healthy salads. She dropped weight at an astonishing rate. However, the rapid weight loss resulted in approximately 13 kg of loose skin, which left Tori feeling even more self-conscious than before.
Impact on Relationships and Intimacies
Tori's loose skin has significantly impacted her confidence and relationships. She feels unable to wear the clothes she wants and takes great care to cover up her excess skin around Dan. "I can't show myself properly," she says. "It's affected my relationship. I have to be really careful about what I wear around Dan. I've never exposed myself fully to him."
Medical Concerns and Lifestyle Changes
Tori's weight had become a serious health concern, and doctors had hinted at the possibility of a heart attack. Her mother, Donna, had tried everything to help Tori lose weight, but to no avail. After suffering a panic attack on a flight due to her inability to fasten her seatbelt, Tori was determined to change her life.
Meeting Dan and Finding Support
In the summer of 2015, Tori met Dan online and started a new job that provided her with a support system. "I made new friends at work," she recalls. "I wanted to feel like I fit in." She also realized that her job as a teaching assistant required her to move around more, which prompted her to start exercising.
Seeking Help
Tori ultimately lost 57 kg, but her loose skin remained an issue. She recently consulted with a specialist who estimated that surgery to remove the excess skin would cost £8,000. Tori has turned to crowdfunding in the hope that strangers will help her raise the funds for the procedure. "I'd never be able to afford this on my own," she says. "There's no way I could save up that kind of money."
