Internet Scammers from America Accused of Fraud
Fraud on the internet is an old topic that has not lost its relevance. Scammers regularly come up with new ways to deceive overly trusting users; some of these methods are true masterpieces - for example, the unknown creator of the legendary 'Nigerian scam emails' received the Ig Nobel Prize in Literature in 2005. Dating websites have always attracted many scammers. The scheme of luring money under the guise of an attractive girl (usually created hastily, using a couple of dozen photos found online) is an old trick, but even now, fraudsters occasionally manage to significantly lighten the wallets of others.
Tracy and Karen Wasser: American Internet Scammers
Recently, two residents of Colorado, Karen and Tracy Wasser, managed to scam their victims out of over a million US dollars. As mentioned earlier, scammers usually pretend to be girls; Tracy and Karen, on the other hand, impersonated men. They posed as American soldiers whose units were stationed in Afghanistan. The mother and daughter duo have been pretending to be American military personnel for three years. During this time, they managed to deceive 375 people from 41 countries, including at least 6 Americans who coincidentally live in the same state as the scammers.
A Global Scamming Project
Karen and Tracy did not act alone; currently, the police believe that the women are part of a global scamming project. The identity of the mastermind behind this project is still unknown, but interestingly, all the clues lead to Nigeria. The unknown scammers took this project quite seriously - to date, 20 legal and physical accounts have been found in 11 local banks, which were used to launder the stolen money. The accounts were registered under the names 'A-Team Distributions Inc.' and 'KKJ Services,' but these names did not yield any substantial leads.
Caught by the Police
While the leaders of this global network have not yet been caught, Karen and Tracy are now in the hands of the police. By the way, Tracy also involved her own daughter in their family business; the 16-year-old girl would withdraw the fraudulently obtained money and send it (after taking her share) to Nigeria. Currently, Tracy Wasser faces a potential prison sentence of 205 years, while her mother is looking at 'only' 172 years behind bars.
