Frank Edwin Wright III: Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Frank Edwin Wright III, better known as Tré Cool, was born on December 9, 1972, in Frankfurt, West Germany. Raised in California, he embarked on his musical journey at a young age, inspired by his neighbor, Lookout! Records' founder Larry Livermore. At age 12, Livermore invited Wright to join his punk band, The Lookouts, giving him the nickname "Tré Cool," a play on the French "très" (very), the Italian "tre" (three), and the English "cool."
Joining Green Day and Musical Success
In 1990, when Green Day's drummer, Al Sobrante, departed, the band invited Tré Cool to take his place. Cool dropped out of high school to pursue music full-time. Despite this, he later earned his GED and enrolled in college, which he eventually left due to Green Day's demanding tour schedule.
Cool's father, a small business owner, converted a van for the band's tours and even drove for them on three tours. He witnessed the band's growth from teenage amateurs to responsible musicians.
Contributions to Green Day's Albums
Beyond his drumming, Tré Cool has contributed vocals and lyrics to Green Day's discography. He sang on "Dominated Love Slave" from "Kerplunk!" and "All by Myself" from "Dookie." He co-wrote part of the track "Homecoming" from "American Idiot" titled "Rock and Roll Girlfriend." Cool also wrote and sang "DUI" (Driving Under the Influence) for the album "Nimrod," which was released solely in the Japanese version of a compilation album.
Personal Life
In 1995, Tré Cool married his longtime girlfriend, photographer Lise Lyons. They welcomed a daughter, Ramona-Isabelle, on January 12, 1995, before divorcing in 1996. In May 2000, Cool married Claudia, with whom he had a son named Frankito ("Little Frank") in 2001. They later divorced in 2003.
