Trevor Hardy: The Beast of Manchester
Trevor Joseph Hardy (born 1947 in Moston, Manchester, Lancashire) was an English serial killer who terrorized the Manchester area from December 1974 to March 1976.
Crimes and Victims
In a series of brutal murders, Hardy earned the moniker 'The Beast of Manchester.' His first victim was 15-year-old Janet Lesley Stewart, stabbed and buried in a shallow grave on New Year's Eve 1974. In July 1975, he murdered 17-year-old Wanda Skala, bludgeoning her with a brick, robbing her, and raping her before dumping her body on a building site. His final victim, 18-year-old Sharon Mosoph, was killed in March 1976 after being stabbed, strangled with tights, and thrown into the Rochdale Canal.
Investigation and Capture
Hardy was initially arrested after the murder of Wanda Skala, but insufficient evidence led him to be released. However, six months later, he resumed his killing spree. After his eventual arrest, Hardy remarkably confessed to the crimes.
Trial and Sentencing
At his trial in the Manchester Crown Court on May 2, 1978, Hardy represented himself and attempted to argue for manslaughter. His efforts were unsuccessful, and he was sentenced to three life sentences.
Imprisonment and Death
Hardy remains incarcerated at Wakefield Prison in West Yorkshire, where he has served over 30 years without incident. He continues to maintain his innocence, but according to a 2008 report in 'The Times,' he is listed among the 50 British prisoners deemed never to be released.
Hardy suffered a fall in his Wakefield Prison cell on September 23, 2012, after experiencing a heart attack. He died in hospital two days later at the age of 67.
