Early Life and EducationTullio Avoledo, an acclaimed Italian writer, was born on June 1, 1957, in Valvasone, a commune in the province of Pordenone. Despite earning a law degree, he initially pursued careers as an advertising professional and journalist.
Literary Beginnings and Breakthrough
In January 2003, Avoledo's debut novel, "L'elenco telefonico di Atlantide" ("The Atlantis Telephone Directory"), was an instant bestseller. It won the Forte Village Montblanc Award as the Best Debut Author of the Year. His second novel, "Mare di Bering" ("The Bering Sea"), followed in November of the same year.
Critical and Commercial Success
Over the next few years, Avoledo released a string of critically acclaimed novels. "Lo stato dell'unione" ("State of the Union") and "Tre sono le cose misteriose" ("Three Mysterious Things") established him as a force in Italian literature. The latter won the Premio Super Grinzane Cavour in 2006 and was shortlisted for the Premio Stresa in the same year.
In 2007, "Breve storia di lunghi tradimenti" ("A Short History of Long Betrayals") garnered two major Italian literary awards: the Premio Letterario Castiglioncello-Costa degli Etruschi and the Latisana per il Nord-Est. The novel is currently being adapted into a film by director Davide Marengo.
Exploration of Alternative Histories
Avoledo continued to explore captivating themes in his subsequent works. "La ragazza di Vajont" ("The Girl from Vajont") presented an impossible love story in an alternate universe, while "L'ultimo giorno felice" ("The Last Happy Day") delved into the fraught relationship between a young architect and the mafia.
Time Travel and Literary Accolades
"L'anno dei dodici inverni" ("The Year of Twelve Winters"), a romantic tale with time travel elements, became a finalist for the Premio Stresa and won the Premio dei Lettori di Lucca in 2010.
In 2011, Avoledo collaborated with Subsonica keyboardist Davide DiLeo on "Un buon posto per morire" ("A Good Place to Die"), a historical novel about the end of the world. Their joint effort was honored with the Emilio Salgari Award in 2012.
