Biography of Turegeldy Sharmanov

Turegeldy Sharmanov is an esteemed figure in the scientific and medical community. He is a Merited Figure of the Republic of Kazakhstan, an academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (RAMS), an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NAN RK), a Doctor of Medical Sciences, and a professor. He was awarded the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of science and technology in 2001 for his series of works on the development of fundamental and applied aspects of nutrition science in the country.

Sharmanov has been recognized for his contributions to the field of medicine and science with various honors and awards. He has been awarded the Orders of October Revolution (1976), Friendship of Peoples (1980), and Parasat (1996), as well as the Medals for Labor Valor (1969) and Distinguished Labor (1970). In 2003, he received the independent Platinum Tarlan Award in the category of science.

Early Life and Education

Turegeldy Sharmanov was born on October 19, 1930, in the village of Ulytau, Ulytau District, Karaganda Region. His father, Beisembaev Sharman (1900-1979), and mother, Beisembaeva Nazipa Abildinovna (1904-2000), played a significant role in shaping his upbringing and values. He is married to Askarova Kulziya Askarovna (born in 1933) and has a son, Sharman Almaz Turegeldiyevich (born in 1960), as well as grandchildren Alua (born in 1981), Torekhan (born in 1991), and Askar (born in 1993).

Sharmanov completed his studies with distinction at the Karaganda State Medical Institute in 1955. He then entered the graduate program at the Department of Pharmacology of the same institute. From 1958 to 1962, he worked as the chief physician of the Ulytau District Hospital in the Karaganda Region. He later served as the head of the Department of Regional Pathology at the Research Institute of Regional Pathology of the Ministry of Health of the Kazakh SSR in Alma-Ata from 1962 to 1968. From 1968 to 1971, he held the position of rector of the Aktobe State Medical Institute and head of the Department of Pharmacology. He served as the Minister of Health of the Kazakh SSR from 1971 to 1982 and simultaneously became the director of the Kazakh Branch of the Institute of Nutrition of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, which he initiated, from 1973 to 1984. He also headed the Department of Nutrition at the Alma-Ata State Institute for Postgraduate Medical Education of the USSR Ministry of Health from 1983 to 1985 and the Department of Nutrition at the Central Lenin Institute for Postgraduate Medical Education of the USSR Ministry of Health from 1985 to 1988. During this time, he also worked as the head of the Clinical Vitaminology Laboratory at the Institute of Nutrition of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (RAMS) and served as the chief editor of the All-Union journal "Issues of Nutrition."

Contributions and Achievements

Since 1988, Sharmanov has been the head of the Scientific Center for Regional Nutrition Problems of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, now renamed to JSC "Kazakh Academy of Nutrition." He has been the president of the Academy of Preventive Medicine of Kazakhstan since May 1995. Sharmanov is the founder of the nutrition school in Kazakhstan and Central Asian republics. The Institute of Nutrition, established by him, is a major scientific institution that deals with a wide range of fundamental and applied issues in hygiene, biochemistry, immunology, physiology of nutrition, diet therapy, and diet prevention.

Under Sharmanov's leadership, fundamental research has been conducted on the interrelationships of nutrients in metabolism, closely associated with prevalent forms of nutrition-dependent diseases. He has developed a new concept of the development of endogenous forms of hypovitaminosis in conditions of protein component imbalance. This scientific basis has led to corrections in the modern system of prevention and treatment of these conditions and nutrition-dependent diseases. Sharmanov is the founder of the fundamental scientific direction of immunology of nutrition, which considers food not only as a factor influencing immunity but also as a crucial condition for its formation, providing necessary antigenic information about the environment. He initiated the development of scientifically-based practices for the creation of adapted dairy products for infant nutrition with pronounced immunostimulating properties.

Sharmanov's extensive research has provided a profound scientific analysis of the actual nutrition, energy expenditure, and health of different age and professional groups in the major climatic and geographical zones of Kazakhstan and Central Asia. It has allowed the development of new norms for physiological requirements in basic nutrients and energy for these populations. Sharmanov is the founder of the first Institute of Nutrition in the Central Asian region, with branches in Dushanbe, Bishkek, and Nukus.

Due to his efforts, the Kazakh Branch of the Institute of Nutrition of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR became the first and only institution in the world to have the official status of an International Nutrition Center collaborating with the World Health Organization (WHO) since 1979. Since 1996, it has been a Collaborating Center for Nutrition of the United Nations University, since 1998, a partner of UNICEF, and since 1999, a partner of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences.

Sharmanov is also known for his development of national nutrition policies in Kazakhstan and the concept of a healthy lifestyle. Under his guidance, the first Center for Child Nutrition was established, bringing innovative products for children's nutrition into healthcare practice. He has led various international research projects on the elimination of iron-deficiency anemia, iodine deficiency disorders, promotion of breastfeeding, and medical-demographic studies, supported by UNICEF, WHO, UNDP, USAID, Macro International Inc., Wellstart, and others.

Contributions to Healthcare and Research

As one of the most authoritative figures in the scientific and medical field, Sharmanov directs his efforts towards drawing the attention of the country's political leadership and the international community to the serious challenges faced by healthcare in Kazakhstan during the difficult transition period. He devotes significant attention to the comprehensive development of practical healthcare, medical science, and the training of healthcare professionals. Under his guidance and consultation, 36 doctoral dissertations and 123 candidate dissertations have been successfully defended.

In 1978, under Sharmanov's initiative and leadership, the International Conference on Primary Health Care was held in Almaty under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), with the participation of official representatives from 146 countries. This conference, known as the "Great Charter of Health for the 20th Century," resulted in the adoption of the Almaty Declaration, which laid out the concept of organizing a national primary health care system. The conference and the adoption of the Almaty Declaration demonstrated the achievements of healthcare in Kazakhstan and gained wide recognition from the global medical community.

Publications and Recognition

Sharmanov is the author of more than 350 publications, including 22 monographs. Some of his notable works include "Nutrition and Health" (1974), "Protein Nutrition and Vitamin C" (1977), "Vitamin A and Protein Nutrition" (1978), "Healthcare in Kazakhstan" (1978), "For the Health of People" (1980), "Universal Right to Health and its Implementation in Different Countries" (1981), "Resistance to Infection under Conditions of Chronic Iodine Deficiency in Nutrition" (1983), "Health Insurance - Good or Evil" (1993), "What Awaits Medical Science" (1994), "Nutrition Policy in the Context of the Almaty Declaration of 1978" (1996), "Kazakhstan 1995. Medical-Demographic Study" (1996), "Long Ascent to the Right to Health" (1998), "Kazakhstan 1999. Medical-Demographic Study" (2000), "Kazakhstan in the Context of Global Nutrition Problems" (2000), "Healthcare Economics and Prospects for the State Health Service in Kazakhstan" (2000), and "World Health before and after the Great Almaty Conference" (2003). He holds 26 patents and author's certificates for inventions.

In 1975, Sharmanov was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (AMN SSSR), and in 1982, he became an academician. Since 1994, he has been an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NAN RK).

Sharmanov is a member of the expert committee of the World Health Organization, as well as various scientific societies in the fields of biochemistry, allergology, immunology, internal medicine in the Republic of Kazakhstan and Russia. He is a member of the editorial board of the scientific-practical journal "Issues of Nutrition" and the chief editor of the scientific-practical journal "Health and Disease." He served as the chairman of the dissertation council at the institute in the field of hygiene. In 1992, he was elected the president of the Kazakh Children's Nutrition Foundation. Sharmanov has also served as a member of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Sharmanov's significant contributions to the field of science and medicine have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In addition to being awarded the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan in 2001, he has been honored with the Orders of October Revolution, Friendship of Peoples, and Parasat, as well as various medals for labor valor.
