Biography of Uma Thurman

Uma Thurman is an American actress and muse of Quentin Tarantino. She has played leading roles in the crime duology "Kill Bill" and the nonlinear film "Pulp Fiction," which are now considered classics of modern American cinema. Uma is popular worldwide. In her honor, the pop-rock band "Fall Out Boy" named a song, and a Russian rock band took a name similar to the actress's name - "Uma2rmaH."

Uma Thurman

Early Life and Career

Uma Thurman, the actress who gained global recognition through her work in Quentin Tarantino's films, was born on April 29, 1970. She was named after a Hindu goddess at the insistence of her father, Robert Thurman, a former Buddhist monk, professor at Columbia University, expert in Eastern religions, renowned writer, and scholar who traveled the world giving lectures. Uma, proud of her unique name, only discovered its uniqueness after visiting Japan, where she was "enlightened" that her name means "horse" in the language of the country of the Rising Sun. Somewhat surprised, the actress did not take offense. How can one seriously be offended by people who idolized you just because your name means something completely different in their language than what your parents intended?

Uma Thurman

Uma was born into an exotic family: her father was perhaps the first and only American to be ordained as a monk in a Tibetan monastery. Her mother, Nena Thurman, now considered one of the country's best psychotherapists, was married to counterculture ideologist Timothy Leary for several years. Truly, the ways of the Lord are inscrutable. Robert and Nena were supposed to meet someday. From early childhood, Uma knew that one day the whole world would talk about her. She didn't know how it would happen, but she believed that her dream would come true. And it did. However, Uma had to follow a long and challenging path.

Breakthrough

New York beckoned to the young girl, and Uma decided that she absolutely had to go to the city that, according to those who had been there, "never sleeps." In the big city, Uma faced disappointment. No one was excited to see her, and she had to seriously consider finding a job. In order to make a living, Uma worked as a dishwasher, cleaner, and waitress, sincerely hoping that one day the capricious goddess Fortuna would favor her. After a long search for work, she managed to land a small role in Terry Gilliam's film, the director of the famous "Monty Python" movie, who took the risk of parodying Botticelli's painting "The Birth of Venus" in his film. Unfortunately, the film did not become highly demanded, but Uma Thurman, who played the role of Venus herself, became the talk of the town. This was followed by her work with John Malkovich and Glenn Close in the film "Dangerous Liaisons." Collaborating with such distinguished actors impressed the budding actress, even though the role she was offered in this extravagant film was not a leading one.

Uma Thurman

Uma only achieved true fame after the release of the film "Henry & June," which, incidentally, was rated NC. It was in this film that Uma earned her status as an intellectual sex symbol. Uma always remained true to her mother the psychotherapist and believed that a film character should remain sexy. It seemed that she had found her niche in cinema and was pleased that people perceived her exactly as she wanted. At least, she fulfilled her childhood dream – people talked about her, idolized her, and admired her.

Continued Success

After working on such a successful film, the young actress received a shower of offers. However, she, as always, selectively approached each role. She went on to star in several films that further solidified her status as a sex symbol. These included the thriller "Final Analysis" with Richard Gere, where she was cast for her beauty and charm; "Jennifer 8," in which her co-star was Andy Garcia; and the famous "Mad Dog and Glory," where she acted alongside Robert De Niro. Another actress might have grown tired of the sexy lady image, but Uma realized that the moment she had been waiting for her whole life had arrived. Although her acting talent was not yet widely recognized, she knew that one day she would have the opportunity to show herself not just as a beautiful companion to the main character. And that chance soon came.

Quentin Tarantino, whom many consider one of the most eccentric directors in mainstream cinema, admitted that he cast Uma Thurman in his film after noticing what she considered her main flaw and preferred to hide - her feet. Yes, Tarantino believed that the larger a woman's feet, the more attractive she was. And Uma had very large feet...

A true star was born in the actress's life. Thanks to her role in "Pulp Fiction," Uma Thurman was nominated for her first-ever Academy Award, the prestigious Oscar. Although she did not win the award, the opportunity to work with such stellar actors as John Travolta and Bruce Willis greatly impressed the young actress.

Later Career and Personal Life

After this, Uma received numerous offers, but she agreed to play only in the rather strange action film "Batman & Robin" by Joel Schumacher, for which she received a nomination for a Golden Raspberry Award for "Worst Supporting Actress."

If this blatant failure had any impact on Uma's career, it was only temporary. Soon, she played one of the leading roles in the science fiction film "Gattaca," where she discovered that she portrayed a wife just as convincingly as she did the sexy beauty. Uma married her co-star Ethan Hawke, with whom she had two children.

Uma received her first significant award for her role in the mini-series "Hysterical Blindness," but her true breakthrough came with the film "Kill Bill," another masterpiece by Quentin Tarantino. Uma received her first "Saturn Award" for her portrayal of the female assassin, which more than made up for her nomination for a Golden Raspberry and other failures.

In June 2018, it was announced that Uma Thurman had applied for Swedish citizenship in order to permanently move to the Scandinavian country. To go through all the legal and bureaucratic procedures, Thurman hired a well-known Swedish lawyer and former Minister of Justice, Thomas Bodström.

In 2019, Uma Thurman will play one of the main roles in the mystical drama series "Chambers" produced by Netflix. The series will consist of 10 episodes.
