Born and Family
Ilan Pappewas born in Jerusalem in 1943 to a Jewish family. His mother's family was largely exterminated during the Holocaust.
Education and Early Life
Activism and Refusal of ServicePappe refused service in the Israeli army on ethical grounds, opting instead for alternative service in the kibbutz Erez from 1961-1983. He earned a bachelor's degree in Arabic and a master's degree in philosophy from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1970). Later, he obtained a PhD in anthropology from the New School for Social Research in New York, USA.
Academic Career
Pappe is currently a Professor at the University of Exeter. He is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Durham. He holds both Israeli and British citizenship and resides between the Israeli cities of Sakhnin and Ramla.
Critique of Zionism and Israeli Policy
Since 1970, Pappe has published extensively about Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories and its policies towards Palestinians, which he compares to the apartheid regime in South Africa. He advocates for a one-state solution with equal rights for Palestinians and Israelis.
Activism and Political Involvement
Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS)Pappe supports the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel. He advocates for the full economic and cultural isolation of Israel as a response to its treatment of Palestinians.

Pappe supports the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes from which they were displaced following the establishment of Israel.
Affiliation with Fatah
Leadership and MembershipPappe was recruited into Fatah by Khalil al-Wazir (Abu Jihad), a senior Fatah military commander and deputy to Yasser Arafat. He held observer status in the Palestinian National Council until 2009. In 2009, he was elected to the Fatah Revolutionary Council, becoming the first Israeli Jew to hold such a position.
Personal Life
Marriage and FamilyPappe converted to Islam after meeting Palestinian Miassar Abu Ali in Ramallah in 2006. They married in 2008, highlighting the challenges faced by Palestinian spouses of Israeli citizens who are denied the right to reside in Israel. Pappe has four children from previous marriages.
