Vacuum: A Swedish Synthpop Group

Vacuum is a Swedish group that plays synthpop music with elements of symphonic rock and 1980s synthpop, as well as dance music from the 1990s. The group was formed in 1996 and was the brainchild of Alexander Magnus Bard, a former member of the popular early 1990s pop trio Army of Lovers. Bard, who was a bass guitarist and producer, wanted to create a more serious group after experimenting with light dance-pop.

The Formation of Vacuum

In addition to Bard, the group consisted of Mattias Johan Borje Lindblom (vocals), who had previously been a member of the lesser-known group Ceycamore Leaves, and Anna Marina Schiptjenko (keyboard). Lindblom's lush baritone voice and Viking-like appearance, combined with symphonic arrangements and lyrics about distant planets, space, and religion, quickly caught the attention of audiences. Vacuum gained popularity, reaching the top positions in the music charts of European countries such as Sweden, Italy, and Greece, as well as in the former Soviet Union countries like Russia, Estonia, and Ukraine.

Success and Impact

In Russia alone, where the group frequently performed, Vacuum sold approximately 2 million copies of their albums, with a significant portion being pirated copies. Over time, the group shifted towards a more pop and dance music style, moving away from their original symphonic sound. For their second album, "Seance At The Chaebol," synthesizers were used instead of a symphony orchestra. Their third album, "Culture Of Night," released in 2000 under the label "Cheiron Studios," included several new compositions as well as remixes of their earlier songs.
