Underwater Rubik's Cube Record-Breaker
Vako Marchilashvili's Historic DiveGeorgian record-breaker, speedcuber Vako Marchilashvili, submerged himself underwater to shatter the record for the fastest underwater assembly of a Rubik's Cube, earning him a place in the Guinness World Records.
Record-Setting Dive
The 18-year-old managed to solve six standard Rubik's Cubes in a record-breaking time of 1 minute and 44 seconds. This category required him to hold his breath, submerge himself, and attempt to assemble as many of the mechanical puzzles as possible. The record-making dive took place at a waterpark in Tbilisi, Georgia, and was witnessed by spectators and representatives from the Georgian Records Federation.
A Daring Method
Marchilashvili, a two-time Georgian Speedcubing Champion, is no stranger to international tournaments. However, this was his first attempt at solving the puzzle while submerged. Nevertheless, he managed to break the record on his very first try.
Breaking Anthony Brooks' Record
Marchilashvili surpassed the achievement of American Anthony Brooks, who held his breath underwater for 78 seconds in August 2014 and managed to solve five Rubik's Cubes. Brooks attempted the puzzle inside a 2-cubic-meter container, the same conditions under which Marchilashvili worked.
Fastest Rubik's Cube Solve
Interestingly, the overall record for the fastest Rubik's Cube solve, in normal conditions, is held by 15-year-old speedcuber Patrick Ponce. The American topped the previous record by just 0.05 seconds in September 2017, clocking in at 4.69 seconds. Ponce required only 17 moves to achieve his incredible time. The teenager admitted to being in shock when informed of his time achievement.
Rubik's Cube History
It's noteworthy that in 2003, the world record stood at 16.7 seconds. The puzzle was invented by Hungarian sculptor Ernő Rubik and has since become immensely popular, selling in astronomical numbers even today.
