Childhood and Education
Valentin Zgursky was born into a family of railway workers in Kotovsk, Odessa Oblast in 1927. During the Great Patriotic War, he worked on the railway and served in a military train on the Ukrainian front. After the war, he completed his education at the Kyiv Railway Technical College and the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, specializing as an electrical engineer.
Career in Engineering and Politics
In 1955, Zgursky joined S.P. Korolev Production Association, where he rose through the ranks to become the general director. From 1979 to 1990, he served as the Chairman of the Kyiv Executive Committee and President of the Council of Heads of Councils of Union Republics. He also held the position of Deputy of the Supreme Council of the USSR.
Chernobyl Disaster Response
In 1986, Zgursky was appointed to the operational commission of the Ukrainian government for the liquidation of the Chernobyl disaster. He led the operational group responsible for addressing the aftermath of the accident in Kyiv.
Academic and Literary Contributions
Zgursky is the author of 13 inventions, 5 monographs, and approximately 100 published works. He holds a doctorate in economics and professorship.
Later Career and Retirement
After retiring from government in 1990, Zgursky has remained active. He serves as the Head of the Supervisory Board for FC Dynamo Kyiv, a Ukrainian football club.
