Vannoccio Biringuccio - Italian Alchemist, Metallurgist, and Architect

Vannoccio Biringuccio (Italian: Vannoccio Biringuccio) was an Italian alchemist, metallurgist, and architect. He was born on October 20, 1480, in Siena and passed away on April 30, 1539, in Rome. Biringuccio dedicated a significant portion of his life to the study of alchemy, metallurgy, and foundry work in Italy, Czechia, and Austria.

During his career, Biringuccio served as the director of the mint in Siena for some time. However, in 1515, he was expelled from the city for altering the composition of the mint's alloy. Despite this setback, Biringuccio's reputation as a master foundry worker spread throughout Europe, leading him to engage in the production of military technology in the Florentine Republic. In 1529, he cast one of the largest cannons of the time, weighing over 6 tons and measuring 6.7 meters in length.

From 1531 to 1535, Biringuccio returned to live in Siena. In the final years of his life, he held the position of the chief foundry worker in the Vatican. Biringuccio was one of the first to observe the increase in the weight of metals when they were heated in the presence of air (calcination, i.e., the transformation into "lime").

Biringuccio's most significant scientific work is his ten-volume treatise called "Pirotechnia" (Pyrotechnia), which focuses on the chemical technology of the early 16th century. This extensive work provides practical information on metallurgy, mining, assaying techniques, pottery, glassmaking, and more. Biringuccio thoroughly describes melting furnaces, air-blowing mechanisms, various devices, techniques, and operations used in the production of large castings such as cannons and bells. He also discusses gold and silver extraction methods, the technique of amalgamation, and the preparation of nitric acid. The final volume of the book is dedicated to gunpowder production and various pyrotechnic compositions.

In the ninth book of "Pirotechnia," Biringuccio also includes discussions on alchemical ideas. However, he often criticizes alchemists, referring to them as charlatans. Biringuccio himself preferred to rely on empirical data rather than alchemical theories when discussing technological processes.

Biringuccio's "Pirotechnia" became a unique technical encyclopedia of its time and gained widespread recognition throughout Europe.
