Saint Babylas and His Disciples
MartyrdomDuring Emperor Maximian's persecution, Babylas, an elderly Christian leader, and his 84 disciples were brought before the court in Nicomedia. They endured cruel tortures to renounce their faith, but remained steadfast. The emperor ordered their execution by beheading.
Christian Burial
Under the cover of night, Christians secretly retrieved the bodies of the martyrs and transported them to Byzantium. They buried Babylas of Nicomedia alongside Babylas of Antioch, whose story was recorded by Eusebius of Caesarea.
Speculation of a Shared Identity
Some scholars have suggested that the two Babylases may have been the same person, especially since certain Byzantine calendars conflate them. However, there is insufficient evidence to definitively prove this theory.
