Matilda was born Matilda Alice Powles on Commandery Street in Worcester, the heart of Worcestershire county. Her father, John Powles, was a comedian and theatre manager. By the age of six, she had taken on her first male role, a parody of the celebrated opera singer Sims Reeves.
