Early Life and Career
Victoria Manalo Draves was born into a family of Filipino and English descent. She initially competed under her mother's maiden name, Victoria Taylor. In 1945, she claimed silver and bronze medals at the U.S. National Championships.
Olympic Dominance
In 1946-1947, Draves emerged as the U.S. champion in platform diving. She extended her dominance to the 3-meter springboard in 1948. At the 1948 London Olympics, she triumphed in both events, making history as the first American of Asian descent to win Olympic gold. Her victory in the 3-meter springboard marked the sixth consecutive win for American women in the event since 1920.
Post-Olympic Career
Draves performed in Buster Crabbe's shows after the Olympics. In 1950, she retired from diving to focus on raising her four sons (Dale, Jeffrey, Kim, and David).
Legacy and Recognition
In 1969, Victoria Manalo Draves was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame, cementing her place among the legends of aquatic sports.
