Biography of Viktor Shost

Born on May 1, 1952, in the village of Popovka, Kharkiv region, Ukraine, Viktor Shost is an opera singer who has established himself as a prominent figure in the world of music. His passion for singing began in his childhood, and he actively participated in amateur artistic performances. He gained recognition as a talented vocalist and became a laureate of the popular television competition "Hello, We Are Looking for Talents."

In 1976, after the competition, Viktor Shost was accepted into the A.V. Lunacharsky State Institute of Theatrical Art (GITIS). He studied under the guidance of Professor A.A. Grigoriev, a People's Artist of the RSFSR, and graduated from the Musical Theater Actor Faculty in 1981. Following his graduation, Shost joined the Bolshoi Theater as an intern before being invited to perform as a soloist at the N.V. Lysenko Kharkiv State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet. A year later, he joined the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre named after P.I. Tchaikovsky, where he performed leading bass roles in operas by Russian and international composers for six years.

Since 1990, Viktor Shost has been a soloist at the Bolshoi Theater in Russia. He is recognized as a People's Artist of Ukraine and a laureate of two international competitions for opera performers named after V.I. Chaliapin. Shost has been a regular participant in opera festivals such as the F.I. Shalyapin Festival in Kazan, the L.V. Sobinov Festival in Saratov, and the "Irina Arkhipova Presents" festival held in various regions of Russia and the CIS countries.

Throughout his active stage career, Viktor Shost has portrayed a variety of characters in operas by renowned composers. These include Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" (Gremin), "Mazepa" (Kochubei), "The Enchantress" (Mamyrov), and "Iolanta" (Rene, Bertrand), as well as Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's "The Tsar's Bride" (Malyuta, Sobakin), "Snow Maiden" (Moroz), and "Christmas Eve" (Head). He has also performed in Modest Mussorgsky's "Khovanshchina" (Khovansky), "Boris Godunov" (Boris, Varlaam), Alexander Borodin's "Prince Igor" (Konchak), Sergei Prokofiev's "The Fiery Angel" (Inquisitor), "War and Peace" (Bolkonsky, Kutuzov), Gioachino Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" (Bartolo, Basilio), Giacomo Puccini's "La Bohème" (Colline, Benoit), "Madama Butterfly" (Bonze, Commissioner), and Giuseppe Verdi's "Aida" (Ramfis), "Il trovatore" (Ferrando), among others.

Viktor Shost has extensively toured and achieved success in Germany, Italy, and other countries. He has performed the role of Timur in Giacomo Puccini's opera "Turandot" in Detroit, United States. The artist can often be heard on the radio and seen on television. He starred as Khovansky in the television version of Modest Mussorgsky's opera "Khovanshchina" filmed in Perm. Besides his operatic career, Viktor Shost is devoted to concert performances. He passionately sings Ukrainian folk songs and enjoys the compositions of contemporary authors, appreciating their melody, depth, and meaningful lyrics.

Outside of his musical pursuits, he has a passion for playing billiards and loves to travel. He shares his life and work in Moscow and has a beloved poodle named Max.
