Vincenzo Coronelli

Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718) was an Italian historian, geographer, and general of the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor.

Early Life and Education

Born in Venice, Italy, Coronelli received a comprehensive education in the liberal arts and sciences. He embraced the Franciscan Order in his youth and later became a priest.

Geographic and Cosmographic Pursuits

Coronelli's true passion lay in geography and cartography. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, studying the topography and history of different regions. His extensive knowledge of the Earth led him to focus on cosmography, the study of the universe and its physical composition.

The Paris Globes

In 1681, Coronelli received a commission from King Louis XIV of France to create a pair of globes. He painstakingly constructed a large terrestrial globe and a matching celestial globe, each approximately 11 feet in diameter. These globes, which incorporated the latest geographical and astronomical knowledge of the time, were presented to the king in 1683 and became part of the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.

Other Works and Legacy

Beyond the globes, Coronelli authored numerous books on geography, history, and astronomy. He also published a series of detailed maps of cities and regions, which were highly regarded for their accuracy and artistic merit. Coronelli's work contributed significantly to the advancement of geographical knowledge and cartography in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
