Early Life and Military Service
Vitaly Nikolayevich Zhalnin was born on April 12, 1925. In October 1943, he joined the Red Army and fought on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He served in various aviation regiments, including the 47th Assault and 8th Guards Assault Aviation Regiments of the Black Sea Fleet Air Force and the 7th Guards Assault Aviation Regiment of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet Air Force.
Heroic Combat Record
Over the course of the war, Sergeant Zhalnin participated in 102 combat missions as a gunner and radio operator. In collaboration with his crewmates and in group formations, he sank or damaged numerous enemy vessels, including 12 transports, 4 guard ships, 3 minesweepers, 10 landing barges, 1 destroyer, 2 torpedo boat bases, 3 guard boats, 2 torpedo boats, a schooner, and a barge. He also destroyed numerous enemy troops and equipment. In addition, he shot down five enemy aircraft in aerial combat.
Distinguished Service
On April 16, 1945, Zhalnin distinguished himself by saving the life of his commander, Guards Captain A. E. Gurgenidze. For his heroism, he was nominated for the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. In 1996, he was finally awarded the title of Hero of Russia for his courage and military valor during the Great Patriotic War.

Vitaly Nikolayevich Zhalnin passed away on May 20, 2000. His legacy as a highly skilled and courageous combat pilot continues to inspire generations of military personnel.
