Vivian Blaine was an American actress and singer, best known for her original portrayal of the character Miss Adelaide in the musical "Guys and Dolls". She began appearing in local productions in 1934 and embarked on a concert tour in 1937, performing with various dance ensembles. In 1942, her agent - and future husband - Manny Franks, secured her a contract with Twentieth Century-Fox. Blaine moved to Hollywood and soon landed a role in the film "Jitterbugs" alongside Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. In 1944, she played the lead role in the film "Greenwich Village", and the following year, she had two major roles in "Nob Hill" and "State Fair". Blaine also had several other less significant roles during this time working for the Fox studio.

Broadway Success and Return to the Stage

In 1950, Blaine made her Broadway debut in Frank Loesser's "Guys and Dolls". Her character, Adelaide, was engaged to the persistent gambler Nathan Detroit for 14 years. After 1200 performances on Broadway with Sam Levene as Detroit and Robert Alda as Sky Masterson, Blaine reprised her role in London's West End in 1953 and on the silver screen in 1955. In the film adaptation, she had the opportunity to work alongside Frank Sinatra, who played Detroit, and Marlon Brando, who portrayed Sky.

Blaine continued to have success on Broadway with notable productions such as "A Hatful of Rain", "Say, Darling", "Enter Laughing", "Company", and "Zorba". At the age of 50, she began to make television appearances, mostly as a guest star in series such as "Fantasy Island" and "The Love Boat". In 1971, Blaine was invited to perform at the 25th Tony Awards, where she sang the iconic song "Adelaide's Lament" from "Guys and Dolls".

Personal Life and Legacy

Blaine was married three times, with her third marriage to Stuart Clark being the most successful. Her career was tragically cut short by her death from congestive heart failure. Vivian Blaine left a lasting impact with her memorable performances on stage, screen, and television.
