Vladimir Romanuk: A Ukrainian Religious Leader
Early Life and ActivismVladimir Romanuk was born into a Uniate family in the village of Khimchin in western Ukraine. As a young man, he was arrested and sentenced to 20 years in prison for his affiliation with the Ukrainian Nationalist Organization (OUN). After his release, he married and completed theological studies in Ivano-Frankivsk and Moscow.
Ministry
From 1964 to 1972, Romanuk served as a priest in the Russian Orthodox Church in western Ukraine. Following his arrest and imprisonment in 1972 for "anti-Soviet agitation," he renounced his Soviet citizenship and declared his affiliation with the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
Imprisonment and Activism
Romanuk was imprisoned in a maximum-security labor camp in Mordovia, where he participated in hunger strikes and other forms of protest. Upon his release, he joined the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, a human rights organization. In 1984, he was awarded a high ecclesiastical honor by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the United States.
Return to Ukraine and Establishment of the Kyiv Patriarchate
After returning to Ukraine in 1990, Romanuk entered monasticism and was ordained a bishop. He advocated for the establishment of an independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church, eventually becoming one of the founders of the Kyiv Patriarchate in 1992.
Patriarch of the Kyiv Patriarchate
In 1993, following the death of Patriarch Mstyslav (Skrypnyk), Romanuk was elected Patriarch of the Kyiv Patriarchate. He served in this role until 1995, when he was forcibly retired.
Legacy
Vladimir Romanuk was a prominent figure in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and a vocal advocate for Ukrainian independence. His legacy includes his efforts to establish an autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church and his opposition to the Russian Orthodox Church's claims on Ukrainian territory.
