Early Life and Education

Vasiliy Aleksandrovich Belogwas born on June 8, 1922, in Krasnodar, Russia. He graduated with honors from the Rostov Institute of Railway Transportation in 1945 and entered graduate school. In 1953, he successfully defended his dissertation on problems related to friction and wear of materials.

Academic Career

Dean and Chair of Mechanical Engineering

Belog served as Dean and Head of the Department of "Machine Parts" at the Belarusian Institute of Railway Engineers in Gomel.

Head of Technical Mechanics Laboratory

In 1960, he became the head of the "Technical Mechanics" laboratory at the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR (AN BSSR). Three years later, he led the laboratory as it was transformed into the Department of Polymer Mechanics.

Director of the Institute of Mechanics

From 1969 to 1979, Belog served as the Director of the Institute of Mechanics of Metal-Polymer Systems within the AN BSSR.

Academic Administration and Honors

Rector of Gomel University

Belog began teaching at the Gomel State University and held the position of rector from 1969 to 1973.

Vice-President of AN BSSR

He served as Vice-President of the AN BSSR from 1973 to 1987.
Rector of Belarusian State University

From 1978 to 1983, Belog served as the Rector of the Belarusian State University, leading it to prominence among over 800 universities in the USSR.

Scientific Contributions

Belog was known for his extensive scientific research on:

Interrelation between molecular and supramolecular structures of polymers with their physicomechanical properties

Friction and wear of polymers

Development of the fundamentals of mechanics of metal-polymer systems
Calculation and design of metal-polymer components

Publications and Patents

Belog authored over 750 scientific articles, 11 monographs, and obtained 350 inventions, including 20 patents in various countries.

Legacy

In 1994, the Institute of Mechanics of Metal-Polymer Systems was renamed after Belog. A memorial bas-relief was installed on the institute building in his honor. In 2004, a square in front of the institute was named after him.
