Early Life and Education

Vladimir Beșleagă was born on July 25, 1931, in the village of Mălăiești (now part of Grigoriopol district). In 1955, he graduated from the State University of Moldova.

Literary Career

Beșleagă began his literary career by writing short stories for both children and adults. His first collections of short stories were published in 1956, 1959, 1963, and 1964. In 1965, he became a member of the Writers' Union of Moldova.

Rise to Prominence

National recognition came to Beșleagă with the publication of his novel "The Cry of the Swift" ("Strigătul cucului") in 1969. The novel was translated into Russian by the publishing house "Sovetsky Pisatel."

In 1978, Beșleagă received the State Prize of the Moldavian SSR for his second novel, "Doma" ("Home"). The novel was also published in Russian by "Sovetsky Pisatel."

Later Works and Recognition

Beșleagă continued to write novels, including "Pain" ("Durere"), "Ignat and Anna" ("Ignat și Anna"), "Blood on Snow" ("Sânge pe zăpadă"), and "The Grandson" ("Nepotul"). His works have been translated into numerous languages of the former Soviet Union.

Literary Translation

Beșleagă also made a significant contribution to Moldovan literature as a translator. He translated into Moldovan works by Leo Tolstoy, Turgenev, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Longus' "Daphnis and Chloe," and Erasmus of Rotterdam's "In Praise of Folly."

Political Career and Later Years

In the early 1990s, Beșleagă served as a member of the Moldovan Parliament. He later became the editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Nistru."
