Vladimir Dakhno: Ukrainian Animation Legend
Early Life and CareerVladimir Avksentyevich Dakhno was born on March 7, 1932, in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. After completing high school, he enrolled in the Kyiv Medical Institute but soon transferred to the Kyiv Civil Engineering Institute. Upon graduating in 1955, he worked as an architect in Kyiv.
Dakhno's unique architectural dissertation project caught the attention of renowned animators M. A. Draytsun and D. Ya. Cherkassky, who invited him to work at the newly established animation studio, "Kyivnauchfilm." In 1960, Dakhno made his animated debut with "The Adventure of Pepper," becoming the debut film of the studio.
Rise to Prominence
Dakhno's talent fully blossomed with the release of the first episode of "How the Cossacks..." in 1967. He directed and wrote the screenplay for this popular animated series. The characters of the show became iconic in Ukrainian animation. Dakhno created nine short films featuring the Zaporozhian Cossacks Gray, Tur, and Oko.
In 1991, the heroes of "How the Cossacks..." starred in "Aeneid," Ukraine's first full-length animated film, directed by Dakhno and based on Ivan Kotlyarevsky's epic poem of the same name.
Later Life and Legacy
Vladimir Dakhno passed away on July 28, 2006, in his Kyiv apartment. He was buried at Baikove Cemetery. His former wife, Lyudmila Ivanovna, arranged his funeral.
On March 7, 2013, Google honored Vladimir Dakhno with a festive doodle. The studio "Ukranimafilm" attempted to revive the master's work, planning to release a continuation of "How the Cossacks..." in 2014. The series was to include a film based on Dakhno's own screenplay.
