Childhood and Education
Ivan Belov was born on February 19, 1926, in the village of Zimovniki, Rostov Oblast, to a shoemaker. He attended 9th grade at the Zimovniki school, where he began writing his first novel, "Otava."
Military Service and Education
In April 1943, Belov joined the Red Army as an artillery commander on the Central Front. He was wounded in battle and awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st degree. After recovering in hospital, Belov continued his education at the Zimovniki school.
Art and Literary Pursuits
Belov studied at the Rostov Art College from 1948 to 1953, pursuing painting and drawing. In 1954, he enrolled in the Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow, graduating in 1960 as a literary worker.
Writing Career and Political Involvement
In 1962, Belov became a member of the Union of Writers of the USSR and was invited to join the Astrakhan Regional Party Committee as an instructor for press and culture. He also led the editorial board of the book publishing house.
In 1968, Belov became the head of the Ulyanovsk Public Writers' Organization. From 1971, he worked as a press consultant for the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs and established the youth editorial office "First Book in the Capital" at the Sovremennik publishing house.
Final Years and Legacy
Belov returned to Rostov Oblast in 1981 and lived in Volgodonsk. He passed away on May 1, 2005. His literary legacy includes the novels "Otava" and "The Column," which have been recognized for their vivid depictions of military experience and the post-war era.
