Early Life and Education
Born into a Military FamilyAndrei Leonov was born on February 18, 1960, in Minsk, Belarus, to a Soviet Army officer. His family relocated to Moscow in 1967 and to the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan in 1972.
Pursuing Literary Interests
Leonov developed a passion for writing early in life. In 1979, he began publishing essays, sketches, and articles in Leningrad newspapers. He graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Culture's Library Faculty in 1982.
Military Service and Professional Career
Serving in the Soviet ArmyFrom 1982 to 1984, Leonov served in the Soviet Army at the Pechenga missile base in the Murmansk Oblast. As a commander of an anti-infantry grenade launcher detachment, he gained valuable experience.
Returning to Civilian Life
Upon completing his army service, Leonov returned to Minsk and worked as a proofreader at the Belarus Institute of Scientific and Technical Information. He later joined the Belarus Republican Library for Physical Culture and Sports as a branch manager (1986-1998).
Literary Debut and Recognition
Writing Science Fiction and Children's LiteratureLeonov began writing science fiction and children's literature in the 1980s. His first children's fairy tales were broadcast on Belarusian Radio in 1984. His debut novel, "The Catamaran 'Fugitive,'" was published in 1994.
Membership in Writers' Union
In 2007, Leonov became a member of the Union of Writers of Belarus and served as the chair of the "Adventure and Fantasy" section. From 2010 to 2012, he held the position of director of the Belarus Republican Literary Fund.
