Biography of Vladimir Yartsev

Vladimir Yartsev was born on October 15, 1924, in the village of Rudnik No. 3 (now Dzerzhinskoye, Rovenkovsky City Council, Luhansk Oblast, Ukraine) in a working-class family. He was Russian and became a member of the Communist Party in 1946. Yartsev joined the Red Army in 1941 and graduated from the Communication School in Stalingrad in 1942.

Participation in the Hungarian Events 1956

In the 1950s, Yartsev served in the Soviet Air Force's Southern Group of Forces in the Hungarian People's Republic. In the autumn of 1956, as the Chief of Communications of the 880th Guards Bomber Aviation Regiment, Yartsev participated in the Hungarian events, officially known as the "suppression of the counter-revolutionary uprising." On November 8, 1956, he was part of the crew of an Il-28 bomber (commander - Guards Captain Alexander Bobrovsky, navigator - Guards Captain Dmitry Karmishin) that carried out a combat mission of aerial reconnaissance of military plants. After successfully completing the task and transmitting valuable intelligence to the headquarters, the Soviet pilots came under anti-aircraft fire near Chepel Island while returning to their airfield. The aircraft was shot down, and the crew perished, fulfilling their military and international duty.

Recognition and Burial

The remains of the brave Guards officers were brought to the Soviet Union and buried with military honors at the Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv, Ukraine. On December 18, 1956, by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Vladimir Yartsev posthumously received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his courage and bravery in fulfilling his military duty.
