Waleran de Luxembourg, Count of Saint-Pol and Ligny
Early Life and SuccessionWaleran de Luxembourg was born to Guy de Luxembourg-Ligny and Mathilde de Châtillon. Upon his father's death in 1371, Waleran inherited the County of Ligny and other domains, including the County of Saint-Pol through his mother.
Military and Political Service
Serving King Charles V of France, Waleran was captured by the English. During his captivity, he married Maud Holland, half-sister of King Richard II of England. In 1396, he negotiated peace with the English in London and was appointed Governor of Genoa the following year.
Burgundian Conflict
During the madness of Charles VI, Waleran supported the Burgundian faction led by John the Fearless. He served as Grand Master of the Royal Forests and Waters of France in 1402 and captured Mercq in 1405. However, he was forced to retreat when English forces arrived from Calais.
Appointment as Constable of France
In 1411, John the Fearless seized control of Paris and appointed Waleran to replace Charles I d'Albret as Constable of France. He fought against the Armagnacs in Normandy, but was forced to retreat and removed from his post in 1413.
Later Life and Death
Waleran died in spring 1415. His only daughter, Jeanne, predeceased him, leaving her son, Philip the Good, as the heir to his domains.

Waleran had two marriages:1. Maud Holland (1380)

2. Bonne de Bar (1400)

Illegitimate Children
Waleran also had several illegitimate children:
- Jean de Luxembourg, legitimized in 1436
- Simon de Luxembourg, legitimized in 1441
