Early Life and Education

Charles Kilburn, a Canadian pianist and music educator, was born and raised in Edmonton, Canada. In 1926, he moved to Toronto to pursue his musical studies. There, he received tutelage from renowned musicians such as Viggo Kiil, Norman Wilks, and Healey Willan.

Church Service and Pedagogy

After completing his education, Kilburn served as the organist and choirmaster at St. Alban's Anglican Church in Toronto. In 1930, he joined the faculty of the Toronto Conservatory of Music, where he taught piano and voice.

Work with Lois Marshall

Kilburn's most significant professional collaboration was with renowned singer Lois Marshall. Beginning in 1936, he served as her teacher and later as her accompanist. Their partnership extended beyond the professional sphere, as they were married from 1968 to 1971.

International Career and Legacy

Together with Marshall, Kilburn embarked on an international tour in 1960. This groundbreaking experience prompted him to leave the Toronto Conservatory and establish his own music school.
