Michael Blumenthal: A Life of Achievement

Early Life and Escape from Nazi Germany

Michael Blumenthal was born into a Jewish family in Oranienburg, near Berlin, Germany. In 1939, with the rise of Nazi persecution, his family was forced to flee to Shanghai. In the late 1940s, they emigrated to the United States.

Ascendancy in American Business and Politics

Blumenthal embarked on a successful career in the United States, holding leadership positions in the American industrial and political sectors. From 1977 to 1979, he served as United States Secretary of the Treasury. Throughout the 1980s, he was President and CEO of Unisys Corporation. He also held diplomatic appointments during this time.

Dedication to German-Jewish History

In the 1990s, Blumenthal turned his focus to the study of German-Jewish history. His efforts culminated in the establishment of the Jewish Museum Berlin. In recognition of this contribution, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.

Director of the Jewish Museum Berlin

In 1997, at the invitation of the Berlin city administration, Blumenthal became Director of the Jewish Museum Berlin. Under his leadership, the museum became a renowned institution dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history of German Jews.
