Wilhelm Lanzky-Otto: A Virtuoso of the Horn and a Renowned Educator
Early Life and Musical LineageWilhelm Lanzky-Otto was born into a family steeped in music in Copenhagen, Denmark. His father, Frederik, was an organist, vocalist, and vocal instructor. His mother, Anna, was an accomplished pianist. Before dedicating himself to the horn, Lanzky-Otto pursued piano, organ, and violin. In 1928, he enrolled at the Copenhagen Conservatory to study piano.
Transition to the Horn and Early Career
In 1927, Lanzky-Otto began studying the horn under the tutelage of the renowned Danish hornist Hans Sørensen. His progress was rapid, and within two years, he secured a position as a soloist with the Zealand Symphony Orchestra. He subsequently performed as a soloist with esteemed Scandinavian ensembles such as the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Royal Danish Orchestra, Iceland Symphony Orchestra, and Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
International Recognition and Pedagogical Legacy
From 1956 to 1967, Lanzky-Otto served as the principal hornist of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Although he retired from his solo position in 1967, he remained with the orchestra as a section member until 1975.
Lanzky-Otto's greatest impact was as an exceptional horn pedagogue. He taught horn at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm for many years. His distinguished students include Frøydis Ree Wekre, Sören Hermansson, James McDonald, Rolf Bengtsson, and his son, Ib Lanzky-Otto. In 1978, Lanzky-Otto was elected an honorary member of the International Horn Society.
