A Life On Ice: The Story of William Beier

Early Years and Family

William Beier, a German figure skater, was born to a Filipina mother and a German father. At the age of seven, he and his sister, Christina, moved from Manila, Philippines to Germany with their father. Tragedy struck soon after their return when their father passed away in a car accident. The children were raised by their paternal relatives in Chemnitz, East Germany, where they began skating for recreation at the local ice rink.

Skating Career with Christina Beier

At the age of thirteen, William and Christina moved to Dortmund to train under the guidance of Oleg Rysjkin. In 1999, they made their international debut. They won the German Junior Championships in 2001 and finished fourth at the Junior Grand Prix Final in the 2002-2003 season. In 2005, they became senior German champions, a title they successfully defended the following season. However, the duo was forced to sit out the entire 2006-2007 season due to a foot injury sustained by Christina. They returned to competition the following season, winning the national championships again but finishing a disappointing 15th at the European Championships, leading to their decision to part ways.

Brief Partnership with Stefanie Frohberg

William briefly partnered with Stefanie Frohberg, but the pair never competed.

Reunion with Christina Beier and Olympic Qualification

In the 2009-2010 Olympic season, the Beiers decided to reunite. To qualify for the 2010 Olympics, the German Skating Union required skaters to earn a certain amount of points at one of the first three international tournaments of the season. William and Christina met this requirement at the 2009 Finlandia Trophy, earning 147.38 points. They were subsequently selected for the German Olympic team. They won their fourth national championship and finished 15th at the European Championships before placing 18th at the Olympics.

Career Ending

In the 2010-2011 season, the Beiers trained under Maxim Staviski and Albena Denkova. However, after just two weeks, William's long-standing knee injury, which had troubled him since 2006, flared up, forcing the pair to retire from competitive skating.
