Early Life and Family
Born as the third son of Spencer Compton, the 2nd Earl of Northampton, a staunch supporter of King Charles I, William Compton's allegiance to the monarchy was instilled in him from a young age. His father was tragically killed during the English Civil War in 1643.
Loyalist Commander
At the tender age of eighteen, William Compton exhibited extraordinary courage and leadership by commanding a regiment and capturing the town of Banbury. For two years, he valiantly defended the town against relentless parliamentary forces. In 1648, he joined the expedition led by the Earl of Kent in support of King Charles I.
Imprisonment and Resistance
Throughout the Commonwealth period, Compton remained a steadfast loyalist. Despite his efforts to restore the monarchy, he was twice captured by republican forces. Undeterred, he continued to participate in various plots and uprisings in support of Charles II.
Restoration and Political Career
With the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, William Compton emerged as a respected figure in English politics. He was elected as a Member of Parliament and appointed to the Privy Council, a body of advisors to the King. His unwavering support for the Crown earned him the favor of Charles II.
