Early CareerAmerican test pilot with a distinguished career in the field of aviation and space exploration. From 1965 to 1968, he served as a test pilot for the X-15 rocket-powered aircraft, completing 16 flights.
X-15 Flights and Spaceflight Recognition
Two of his X-15 flights surpassed 50 miles in altitude, a threshold recognized by the U.S. Air Force as a spaceflight. However, it wasn't until August 23, 2005, that NASA officially designated him as an astronaut.
Contributions to Aviation
In addition to his X-15 exploits, he participated in the testing of the M2-F1, M2-F2, M2-F3, HL-10, X-24A, and X-24B aircraft. His contributions to the advancement of aviation technology and the exploration of space are significant.
