William Keeling: English Navigator and East India Company Captain

William Keeling was an English mariner who served as a captain for the East India Company. He played a pivotal role in the early voyages of the company to India.

Early Voyages

In 1604, Keeling commanded the ship "Susanna" on the East India Company's second voyage to India. Subsequently, in 1607, he led the "Red Dragon" on the company's third voyage.

Artistic Pursuits

During the third voyage, while traversing the seas off West Africa, Keeling's passion for the arts became evident. He organized performances of Shakespeare's plays aboard the ship to entertain the sailors during the long journey.

Shakespeare's Influence

Keeling's ship's log contains entries that attest to his cultural interests. On September 5, he noted a performance of "Hamlet." On September 30, he recorded the crew's enjoyment of "King Lear."

Discovery of Cocos (Keeling) Islands

On the return voyage from Java to England in 1609, Keeling discovered the Cocos Islands. These islands were later named in his honor.

William Keeling's contributions to English maritime history and his commitment to arts and entertainment onboard his voyages left a lasting mark. His explorations and his efforts to enhance the cultural experience of his crew continue to inspire future generations of mariners and adventurers alike.
